Kimberly A. Jameson
Lab Director
Kimberly is a cognitive scientist conducting research at the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Color plays a prominent role in her empirical and theoretical work, which includes research on the mathematical modeling of color category evolution among communicating artificial agents; individual variation and universals in human color cognition and perception; empirical work on the genetic basis of human color perception; and comparative investigations of the ways the world’s cultures name and conceptualize environmental color. She directs the Color Cognition Laboratory at UC Irvine, and is the lead researcher responsible for the preservation, transcription, digitalization, and public-access dissemination of the Robert E. MacLaury cross-cultural color categorization archive.

Frequent Collaborators

Louis Narens
Professor
Cognitive Sciences
Louis is a Professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences. Measurement is the link between empirical reality and mathematics. In psychology and social sciences it often takes a markedly different form than in the physical sciences, and much of his current research has focused on exactly specifying what this different form may be. He also conducts research on metacognition, which is the study of how complex information processors use information about their own processing to draw inferences about the nature of what is being processed. In this area, he has concentrated on metacognition involving memory systems, including such topics as "feeling-of-knowing," metamemory, and self-directed learning.

He collaborates with the Color Cognition Lab on Bilingual Color Cognition research, the REM ColCat Archive project, and the Color Term Evolution project.

Sean Tauber
Assistant Project Scientist
IMBS
Sean studies the mathematical and computational principles underlying human cognition using a combination of approaches from mathematical psychology, computational cognitive science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. He focuses on the cognitive processes and mental representations involved in different aspects of high-level cognition such as learning, memory, generalization, categorization and social cognition.

He collaborates with the Color Cognition Lab on the REM ColCat Archive project and Color Term Evolution projects.

Sergio Gago
Information Technology Specialist
Calit2
Sergio is the project leader for developments focused on user interfaces and emotional design to improve user-product interaction and experience. He manages projects and mentors students in research areas such as products and system engineering, interfaces and computer sciences.

He collaborates with the Color Cognition Lab on the REM ColCat Archive project.

Natalia Komarova
Professor
Math Department
Natalia's research lies in the interface between mathematical and life sciences. She formulates interesting questions in areas of biology, medical and social sciences and linguistics, in the language of mathematics. She investigates these questions by using techniques of applied math. Her two main interests are modeling of cancer and evolution of language.

She collaborates with the Color Cognition Lab on the Color Term Evolution project.

M. Christina Kenney
Professor
School of Medicine
Dr. Kenney is a professor and director of laboratory research at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, UC Irvine School of Medicine, overseeing the various eye-related research projects at that institution. She is a highly accomplished clinician scientist and is recognized as a leader in the fields of genetic and biological research related to disorders of the retina and cornea. She conducts research on the genetic abnormalities associated with the development and progression of age-related macular degeneration.

She collaborates with the Color Cognition Lab on the Human Tetrachromacy Project.

Alissa Winkler
Postdoctoral Scholar
University of Nevada, Reno
Ali Winkler’s research focuses on modeling the function of neural mechanisms that contribute to individual perceptual differences using psychophysical and neuroimaging methods. Her involvement studying the links between visual processing, potential tetrachromacy and art is especially exciting because it permits an opportunity to demonstrate first – that the brain has the capacity to make use of sensory input from a fourth photoreceptor class, and second – how the brain incorporates this additional sensory input into a personal cognitive architecture that supports a shared conceptual meaning system. She currently works as a cognitive neuroscientist, researching perceptual adaptation of color and form in the Visual and Perception Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno.

She collaborates with the Color Cognition Lab on the Human Tetrachromacy Project.
