Adams Conditionals
Brian Skyrms
Adams account of conditionals as carriers of conditional probabilities
is explored and extended for two interpretations of the relevant probability.
Taking the probability to be degree-of-belief yields a natural learning
conditional. Taking it to be the appropriate kind of objective chance leads
to the decision-making conditional. Extrapolation of the decision making
conditional beyond decision making situations leads to generalized Bayesian
conditionals. Semantical accounts of subjunctive conditionals of Stalnaker,
van Fraassen and Lewis turn out to be equivalent to special cases of Bayesian
conditionals.
